What is an industrial designer?

Once a year there is a special class in Hamburg. Children from the 3rd grade can get an insight into the working and professional world under the topic "Professions - as part of the general knowledge lessons".

What does an industrial designer actually do? Class 3B from the elementary school in Döhrnstraße asked us this question and many more. On this day, our office with 16 employees received an addition of 25 curious children. The colorful backpacks were placed in the hallway and off we went. Our boss Thomas Märzke received the group and gave a small presentation about the profession of industrial designers as an introduction. Then we continued creatively. An infusion needle was presented and the children were asked to come up with new concepts of how such a needle could be improved.

It continued with the precision scale from Mettler Toledo. How much does a large sheet of paper weigh? It was measured most accurately with the scales. Then all the children were allowed to sign it and suddenly the result was completely different. It was amazing how precise these scales are. The children then came to our workplaces, curious and interested, to talk to us and ask questions about our profession. Ergonomic models were tried out, drawing tablets were used and 3D worlds were examined.

Throughout the morning, the students were able to gain insight into the professional world of an industrial designer, step by step. And who knows who will be applying to study industrial design in about ten years' time.
